Type:
Correspondence and communication
Description:
Fragment of a letter from William Emerson (1743-1776) to his mother-in-law, Phebe Walker Bliss (1713-1797). Emerson refers to his travel plans with his wife, Phebe Bliss Emerson(1741-1825). He requests that Bliss ask some neighboring ministers to fill in for him while he is away. William Emerson (1743-1776) is the grandfather of Transcendentalist writer Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882). In 1765, he succeeded the late Rev. Daniel Bliss (1715-1764) as minister at First Parish Church in Concord. He married Bliss’s daughter, Phebe Bliss Emerson (1741-1825), in 1766 and had five children. On August 16, 1776, Emerson left Concord to join the Continental Army as a chaplain at Fort Ticonderoga. Once there, he caught dysentery and was discharged in September. On the way back to Concord, he died at the home of Rev. Benajah Roots in Rutland, Vermont on October 20, 1776.
