Description:
Handwritten description of the contents of the estate of William Emerson (1743-1776). The report is signed by Ephraim Wood, Nathan Barrett, and Humphrey Barrett; it is countersigned by Ezra Ripley (1751-1841), Phebe Bliss Emerson Ripley (1741-1825), and his son, William Emerson (1769-1811). William Emerson (1743-1776) is the grandfather of Transcendentalist writer Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882). In 1765, he succeeded the late Rev. Daniel Bliss (1715-1764) as minister at First Parish Church in Concord. He married Bliss’s daughter, Phebe Bliss Emerson (1741-1825), in 1766 and had five children. On August 16, 1776, Emerson left Concord to join the Continental Army as a chaplain at Fort Ticonderoga. Once there, he caught dysentery and was discharged in September. On the way back to Concord, he died at the home of Rev. Benajah Roots in Rutland, Vermont on October 20, 1776. Ezra Ripley replaced William Emerson (1743-1776) as pastor in Concord in November 1778 and boarded at The Old Manse in one of the attic chambers. Two years later, Ripley married Emerson’s widow, Phebe Bliss Emerson (1741-1825).
