Description: Flemish tapestry, 16th century. Features a hunting scene with men on horseback with spears, and several others on foot, hunting rabbits that they have trapped in nets. The men on foot are "beaters," responsible for chasing rabbits out from the undergrowth. In the background there is a town or city, thought to be Jerusalem, Halicarnassus, Paris, or Rhodes. This tapestry is likely to have been trimmed to fit the wall in the stair hallway either prior to purchase by the Choates, or immediately after; it does not feature a decorative border that nearly all tapestries of the period possess.The distinct inexpert use of perspective points to its date, at which the use of perspective had not yet become widespread or well known - a convention discovered during the Italian Renaissance (late 15th to 16th century).The colors on the tapestry have faded considerably, both due to its continuous display, and 19th century restorations in which early synthetic dyes were used on threads.
