Description: Mounted doily with calligraphic rendering of an address that William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878) delivered at the laying of the cornerstone of the National Academy of Design in New York City, New York. The transcription is styled into the shape of the words, "Remarks of Mr Wm C Bryant." The words are framed by a blue and black border that contains information about the original remarks. Below the border is a dedication to Bryant and the name of the creator, "his obedient servant David Davidson." William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878) was a prominent poet and journalist from Massachusetts. In 1821, Bryant was invited to address the Phi Beta Kappa Society at Harvard University's commencement. The poem that he delivered led to the publication of his first collection. Bryant went on to become the editor of The New York Review before joining the New York Evening Post, first as the Assistant Editor and later as its Editor-in-Chief and part owner. The William Cullen Bryant Homestead in Cummington was built by Bryant's grandfather in 1783. The house was sold out of the family in 1835, but Bryant repurchased his childhood home thirty years later. The house and its surrounding landscape served as inspiration for many of his poems.
