Description: Typewritten letter to Naumkeag's gardener, Robert R. Crighton, from Fletcher Steele (1885-1971), the landscape architect who worked closely with Mabel Choate (1870-1958) to design the gardens at Naumkeag. The letter, on Steele's letterhead, is in regards to the Chinese Garden and Moon Gate in that garden. Steele includes a photograph from one of his trips to China of a moon gate for reference. Additional information written on photograph: China. Near Peking. Blk. Dragon Pool Temple. Fletcher Steele was a landscape architect who did the majority of his work in private gardens. One of his few extant commissions is at Naumkeag in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, a summer home that was built for Joseph Hodges Choate (1832-1917) and inherited by Choate's daughter, Mabel Choate (1870-1958). Steele designed gardens at Naumkeag for Mabel Choate from 1926 to 1958.
