Description: Handwritten lecture delivered by Rev. Samuel Ripley (1783-1847). The manuscript begins, "It has been so ordered by Providence that our free & happy country has become a refuge for the poor & oppressed from every quarter of the world and whatever may be our private opinions with regard to the effects produced on the moral & political state of society by this influx of strangers - we should remember that we were once strangers here - that our fathers fled from oppression to this savage wilderness, & were protected by the natives. Let us not prove to others more inhumane than savages." Samuel Ripley (1783-1847) was the son of Rev. Ezra Ripley (1783-1847) and Phebe Bliss Emerson (1741-1825). He served as the minister at First Parish in Waltham, where he lived with his wife, Sarah Alden Bradford Ripley (1793-1867). In 1842, he rented The Old Manse to Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) and his new wife, Sophia Peabody Hawthorne (1809-1871). During their stay, Hawthorne wrote a collection of stories, Mosses from an Old Manse, which he later published in 1846. It was this book that gave The Old Manse its name: a Scottish term for a minister’s house.
