Description:
The Dino Mottarella Photographs of Naumkeag document the active construction of various projects throughout the estate. These photographs can be dated from 1940 to 1947, showing the gardens at Naumkeag, including construction of Devil's Screen, construction of stone wall by summer house, construction of tool sheds under Arborvitae Allee, shots of the masonry crew, scenes and views of the garden including the Chinese Temple, Pagoda, South Lawn, and the Evergreen Garden, and views of Naumkeag taken from the main house roof. People pictured include: Dominic Mottarella, head stonemason at Naumkeag; Richard Mottarella, and Batista Perra. Negatives of many of the photographs are in the collection, as well as negatives without positive photograph prints.; Dino Mottarella was born on 09 January 1924 in Lee, Massachusetts and moved with his family to New Rochelle, New York in 1926. As a teenager, Dino worked in the summer months for his uncle Dominic Mottarella. Dominic Mottarella did much of the masonry at Naumkeag during the 1930's and 1940's, as well as making repairs throughout the estate. In 2006, Dino Mottarella participated in an oral history with the Trustees of Reservation staff where he described elements of the collection.
