Greetings from The Trustees! The Trustees’ Archives & Research Center contains dozens of vintage postcards that represent both The Trustees properties as well as surrounding areas. Postcards first became popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Today, the collecting and study of postcards, known as deltiology, is a popular pastime. Postcards are valuable not only for the period pictorial representations of local landmarks, such as this dramatic nighttime view of the Cape Poge Lighthouse (circa 1912) but also for the correspondence on the back, which can help date and contextualize the images. This postcard was sent to Saratoga, Wyoming, a small town, 130 miles north of Cheyenne, the state’s capital.
Today, the Coast Guard-owned Cape Poge Lighthouse is managed by The Trustees and the surrounding Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge is a popular Martha’s Vineyard destination for beach-goers and bird watchers alike. The Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge is one of eleven The Trustees reservations on the Cape and Islands, which include a variety of environments: beach front properties, a campground, wildlife refuges, formal gardens and farm land.
