Ashintully (from the Gaelic meaning, “on the brow of the hill”) was the name given to the original 1,000-acre estate assembled in the early 20th Century by Egyptologist and two-time state representative, Robb de Peyster Tytus from three farms in Tyringham and additional land in Otis. In the historical collections relating to the property, photographs document New England farm life in the early 20th Century— including maple sugaring, ice cutting, sheep shearing, and other agricultural activities.
Today, Ashintully is no longer a working farm. However, The Trustees own and manage eight vibrant, working farms in Massachusetts: Appleton Farms, Cornell Farm, Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate, Moose Hill Farm, Moraine Farm, Land of Providence, Powisset Farm, and Weir River Farm. Each farm has its own unique attributes, from iconic red New England barn buildings to miles of rolling grasslands and trails; visitors can observe grazing livestock and purchase locally produced cheese and eggs. While farmland in the nation is rapidly disappearing, The Trustees consider preserving this piece of our collective history a crucial part of our mission.
