Title: Long Hill

Description: Long Hill is a 114-acre property in Beverly, Massachusetts. Long Hill was the summer home of Bostonians Ellery Sedgwick (1872-1960) and Mabel Cabot Sedgwick (1873- 1937). Ellery Sedgwick was the editor and publisher of Atlantic Monthly magazine from 1909-1938. Mabel Sedgwick, an accomplished horticulturalist, was the author of the popular book, The Garden Month by Month, published in 1907. When they purchased the property in 1916, much of their land consisted of open pasture surrounded by forests and wetlands. The Sedgwicks transformed the former farm into a vibrant and colorful country estate. Constructed from 1922-1924, the main house is a finely articulated Colonial Revival building, designed in the Federal style of Charleston, South Carolina's antebellum homes by architects Richardson, Barrott & Richardson. The gardens at Long Hill exemplify Mabel Sedgwick's strong intuition for garden design as an expression of meaningful relationships between people and landscapes. After her death in 1937, that vision was sustained and expanded by the second Mrs. Sedgwick, the former Marjorie Russell (1896-1978), a rare plants specialist, who added new and rare species of trees and shrubs to the estate. In 1979, The Trustees began their stewardship of the property.
