Description: The William Cullen Bryant Homestead is a 195-acre property in Cummington, Massachusetts. The Homestead was the childhood home of one of America's foremost 19th-Century poets, William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878). Bryant served as editor and publisher of The New York Evening Post for 50 years. In 1865, 30 years after the Homestead was sold out of family hands, Bryant bought it back and summered there until his death in 1878. The Homestead’s pastoral landscape, largely unchanged for more than 150 years, includes pastures, fields, a maple sugar bush (that has been tapped for more than 200 years), and woodlands. Inside the house, there are Colonial and Victorian pieces from the poet’s family, as well as memorabilia from his extensive European and Asian travels. The original acreage was bequeathed to The Trustees in 1927. The Homestead was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1966.
