Description: The Governor Oliver Ames Estate is a 36-acre property in Easton, Massachusetts. For more than 100 years, generations of the Ames family have shaped this landscape. Massachusetts Governor Oliver Ames and his wife Anna first made their home here in the 1860s. The Ames family made its fortune in the shovel business. Governor Oliver and his son Oakes loved plants. They built elaborate greenhouses, grew unusual tree species, and turned a swampy spot into an ornamental pond. Today, more than a century later, saplings planted by Ames have grown into beautiful, towering trees, and pepper the property, which includes a 19th-Century stone stable, farm fields, a brook and several garden ponds. The Trustees purchased the property in 2012.
